The SUN Automation Case Study

As a top-tier supplier of corrugated machinery to factories around the world, SUN envisioned building a cutting-edge solution to solve the problem of “brain drain” for their customers. The clock was ticking: SUN had to go to market quickly to gain a competitive foothold over emerging third-party offerings.

That’s when they called on Very to develop their ground-breaking product, anomaly detection solution built on AWS IoT Core — Helios.

We tackled the project in two primary phases:

Phase 1: We conducted a technical design sprint to research who were the product users, and what mattered most to them.

Phase 2: Using our custom Agile IoT development process, we built the solution using the following tech stack:

Firmware: Nerves and NervesHub for the gateway device
Hosting: AWS
Data pipeline: AWS IoT, AWS Lambda, and AWS Kinesis Firehose - all coordinated through Serverless Framework
Data storage: Application data stored in AWS RDS, with long-term storage in AWS S3
Web application: Phoenix framework and React for front end

The PowerX Case Study

PowerX, a pioneering company that’s revolutionizing smart energy solutions for homeowners, needed to scale — quickly. From confronting the challenges of scaling their smart home product suite, to strategically addressing complex hardware and software systems, Very worked with PowerX to leverage AWS IoT Core as they pushed through growing pains.

How did we do it?

Phase 1: We conducted a technical design sprint to identify opportunities for improvement processes, as well as in PowerX's hardware and software products.
Phase 2: We prepared the platforms for scale. For software, we focused on implementing firmware improvements, software best practices, version control, automated testing, and a reconfigured back end infrastructure. For hardware, we conducted detailed design reviews and prepared the units for FCC Part 15 certification.
Phase 3: We developed new software and hardware features — empowering them to deliver even more value to their customers while increasing their margins.
